Product Description

Brno Chair (Model MR50) Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in collaboration with Lilly Reich between 1929 and 1930, the Brno Chair was custom-made for the Tugendhat House in Brno, Czech Republic. A masterpiece of modernist furniture, it embodies Mies’ iconic maxim: “Less is More”

  • Design Context:Created during the peak of the Bauhaus movement, it served as the core furniture for the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Tugendhat House, with 24 tubular steel versions and 1 flat steel version originally produced for the dining room and bedroom。
  • Structural Innovation:Features a revolutionary cantilever one-piece steel frame with no rear legs. The frame bends into a continuous C-shape from the mid-backrest, curves forward to form armrests, then loops under the seat to the floor, creating a weightless, floating visual effect。
  • Materials & Finishes:Available in tubular steel and flat bar steel versions. The original frame was polished stainless steel; modern iterations often use chrome-plated steel. The seat and backrest are upholstered in premium leather for durability and minimalist aesthetics。
  • Legacy & Recognition:An icon of 20th-century design, it is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. It was also named one of the “80 Man-Made Treasures” in the 2005 BBC series Around the World in 80 Treasures, shaping the development of minimalism and functionalism in furniture design。
