Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen (9 September 1894 – 31 January 1967) was a legendary Danish architect, designer, writer, and cultural critic, widely known simply as "PH". A central figure in 20th-century Danish design, he is celebrated as the "Poet of Light" and the "Father of Glare-Free Lighting".
Born in Copenhagen, he studied architecture before dedicating himself to lighting design. His lifelong collaboration with the Danish lighting brand Louis Poulsen laid the foundation for Nordic lighting design. His core design philosophy—"scientific and human-centric lighting"—advocated for soft, glare-free, natural light combined with artistic beauty. In 1925, his first PH lamp won the Gold Medal at the Paris International Exposition, launching the iconic PH lamp series. In 1958, he created the masterpiece PH Artichoke Lamp, a global symbol of Danish design.
Beyond lighting, he worked in architecture, furniture, and piano design. His works blend scientific precision with poetic aesthetics and are held in major museums worldwide.
