Niels Jørgen Haugesen

Niels Jørgen Haugesen (1936–2013) was a celebrated Danish furniture designer. He completed his cabinetmaker apprenticeship in 1956 and graduated from the Danish School of Arts, Crafts and Design in 1961. In the late 1960s, he worked under the iconic designer Arne Jacobsen, who deeply influenced his design philosophy focusing on craftsmanship, simplicity and functionality.

He founded his own design studio in 1971, and also taught at the Danish Design School, nurturing young designers. Haugesen rose to international fame with his X-Line Chair (1977), a minimalist classic known for clean lines, light structure and practicality, which has been reissued by the brand HAY. His other representative works include the Fleur Chair (1998) and the Distance Sofa (2002).

During his career, he received numerous honors, including the ID Design Award (twice) and the Danish Furniture Prize (Møbelprisen) in 1996. His works are collected by world-famous museums such as MoMA in New York and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
