Eames La Chaise

Designed in 1948 by Charles and Ray Eames, the Eames La Chaise was created for the “International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design” organized by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New YorkEames Office. Its organic silhouette was inspired by Floating Figure, a 1927 sculpture by French artist Gaston Lachaise; the name “La Chaise” pays homage to the sculptor and means “the chair” in French. With its sculptural form and complex manufacturing requirements, the design was deemed too costly for mass production and remained unreleased for over 40 years. It was finally put into production in 1991 by Vitra, the licensed European manufacturer, and has since become an icon of modern organic design, included in the permanent collections of MoMA and other major institutions. The lounge features a one-piece molded fiberglass shell supported by chrome-plated steel rods and a solid wood cruciform base. Its fluid, cloud-like curves accommodate a range of reclining positions for one or two people, blending artistic sculpture with functional comfort for relaxation, reading, or conversation.
