Marcel Lajos Breuer

Marcel Breuer (1902–1981) was a Hungarian-American architect and furniture designer, and a pivotal figure of Bauhaus and modernism. He studied at the Bauhaus in Germany and later worked as the director of the school’s furniture workshop. In 1925, he created the iconic Wassily Chair, pioneering the innovative application of bent tubular steel in furniture design. To escape the war, he moved to the United States and taught at Harvard Graduate School of Design. He integrated minimalist and functional Bauhaus concepts into his designs. His masterpieces include classic steel furniture, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the UNESCO Headquarters. With outstanding design achievements, he exerted a profound and far-reaching influence on modern architecture and furniture design.
